Statue of George Merrick

Noticing the lack of a monument to Coral Gables’ founder, George Merrick, the Garden Club commissioned a statue of him to be placed in front of City Hall. In May, 2006, the 12-foot high bronze statue, sculpted by William Beckwith, was installed and dedicated. Architect Rocco Ceo designed the pedestal, constructed of massive pieces of coral rock, and the surrounding low bench.

The bust of this statue is built into the award presented annually by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce to an outstanding individual. In 2009 and 2016 the award went to our members Betsy Adams and Dorothy Thomson, respectively.
